Groundbreaking Celebration Marks Commencement of DSRT Surf

Palm Desert — May 23, 2024

DSRT Surf, the highly anticipated surf resort anchored by a revolutionary man-made surfing lagoon celebrated a significant milestone today. The project officially broke ground at the iconic Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Desert, CA. DSRT Surf aims to redefine the surfing experience by offering unparalleled waves in a beautiful resort setting. Combined with top shelf food and beverage, world class golf courses, pickleball, pool, skate park, and other activities, DSRT is the premier destination for surf enthusiasts and families alike.

The groundbreaking ceremony attended by local and regional officials, stakeholders, industry pioneers, and surfing professionals marked the beginning of construction on this ambitious project. DSRT Surf promises to deliver a world class, dynamic surf environment featuring Wavegarden’s state-of-the-art, Cove technology. Perfect waves will be created at the push of a button, all day, every day.

“Today marks an exciting moment for the Southern California surfing community and for the city of Palm Desert” said John Luff, Managing Member of Beach Street Development and Operations — the developer and operator of DSRT Surf.  “DSRT Surf is introducing the largest Wavegarden Cove in the United States. The five-and-a-half-acre surf lagoon will offer world class waves for both experienced veterans and first-time surfers. Today’s groundbreaking ceremony culminates years of development and starts the next chapter in bringing this unique and iconic vision to life, expanding the Southern California surfing landscape.”

Notably, the park’s innovative design and sustainable practices underscore its commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement. Eric Ceja, Director of Economic Development, Palm Desert stated ”With their Turf for Surf program and the removal of more than one million square feet of turf they will be offsetting more than the water they are using for this project.”

In addition, much of the lagoons water filtration and spill will be reclaimed through dry wells recharging the aquifer and further reducing the project water use.

The DSRT Surf lagoon will be powered by Wavegarden technology allowing over 70 surfers to participate simultaneously on both advanced and beginner waves. "We would like to acknowledge the hard work and contributions of everyone in reaching this important milestone," said Fernando Odrioziola, Chief Commercial Officer at Wavegarden. "Palm Desert, California is such an iconic area, and we can't wait to start building the first Wavegarden Cove in California. Exchanging "turf for surf" will create an amazing oasis in the desert that will become a true asset for many people to enjoy."

Construction on DSRT Surf is expected to take roughly two years and will open to the public in early summer 2026. Interested in investing in this project? Head over to the DSRT Surf website for more info.
